Mukoza Duncan Mwesigwa 17/U/6502/PS

Below are the activities carried out by Mukoza Duncan Mwesigwa during the week of March 22nd, 2021 - March 28th, 2021.
  1. On Monday, 22nd March, 2021, we had a meeting with our supervisor to present three of our project ideas. She encouraged us to continue with our current project.
  2. I was able to secure an appointment with Dr. Peter Ebanyat, a Soil Scientist at the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES).
  3. On Friday, 26th March, 2021, I together with my group mates had a meeting with Mr. Kyeyune Gerald who is a specialist in crop pests and diseases at CAES. During the meeting, he gave us more information in relation to the different pests and diseases that affect the crop of maize as well as the ways in which the plant can be taken care of. He also gave us information on how some of the pests and diseases can be identified using their signs and symptoms.
  4. Shortly after that meeting, we went ahead and met Dr. Peter Ebanyat who gave us more information concerning the different types of nutrients that are needed by the maize crop during growth. He informed us of the major growth nutrients needed by the crop, the behaviours of those nutrients as well as the signs of deficiency. He went ahead to also direct us to some of the different books, research centres and websites from which we would be able to get more information.
  5. We met as a group to discuss our findings from the meetings that we had. We also made the necessary adjustments to our project idea from a more informed position.

Below are the activities carried out by Mukoza Duncan Mwesigwa during the week of March 29th, 2021 - April 4th, 2021.
  1. On Monday, 29th March, 2021, we had a meeting with our supervisor at 3pm to discuss the developments of our project idea.
  2. After the meeting with our supervisor, we had a group discussion to organize and adjust our project in relation to the advice that we had got from our supervisor.
  3. I went with other group members to the Makerere University-Kabanyolo Farm and Research Centre in order to gather information concerning the growing of maize as well as the different uses of the maize crop in Uganda and other neighbouring countries. We had a successful interview with Mr. Stephen Lwasa, the farm manager of the farm.
  4. I played a role in generating the interview materials such as the interview guide and prepared the questions which we used during the interview with Mr. Stephen Lwasa at Kabanyolo.
  5. Later on, I worked with my group mates to organize, analyze and interprete the findings that we made during the interview.

Below are the activities carried out by Mukoza Duncan Mwesigwa during the week of April 12th, 2021 - April 18th, 2021.

  1. On 15th April, 2021 at 11:45am we, as a group went to the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and had an interview with Mr. Kyeyune Gerald, a specialist in crop pests and diseases, who explained to us some of the ways in which the maize crop needs to be taken care of and referred us to some of the sources from which we can get the necessary information that we need about the crop.
  2. I, later on, attended a meeting with my group mates to organize, analyze and interprete the information that we acquired from our interviews.
  3. I also prepared the interview materials that we were to use in our next meeting with Dr. Peter Ebanyat at CAES.
  4. We had another meeting with Dr. Peter Ebanyat on Friday, 16th April, 2021 were we acquired more information from him as agreed during our previous meeting with him. He gave us two books to enable us to carry out more research on the nature of the nutrients of interest as well as their behaviour with the maize crop.

Below are the activities carried out by Mukoza Duncan Mwesigwa during the week of April 19th, 2021 - April 25th, 2021.

  1. On 19th April, 2021, I went with my group mates for another visit to the Makerere University Kabanyolo Farm and Research Centre. This visit was more practical in relation to the previous one as we were attached to one of the farmers in charge of the growing of maize on the farm. He took us through a number of maize plantations. Our accomplishments from that visit include:
  • We were able to see the maize plants that had just been planted a short while back.
  • We were able to finally see the colourations on the maize plant which were caused by the genetic makeup of the plant and differentiate them from those caused by the deficiencies of the nutrients of interest.
  • We were also able to observe and analyze the different maize plants that had deficiencies in the minerals of interest. We were able to practically see and understand the nature of the different signs of deficiency. We also collected some samples.
  • We also had an interview with one of the farmers, Mr. Patrick Mzee.
  1. Later on that day, we had a meeting with our supervisor to present our progress in our research.
  2. We had a group discussion to organize, analyze and interprete our finings from our visit to the farm as well as our meeting with our supervisor.
  3. On Thursday, 22nd April, 2021, I (together with another groupmate of mine) went to the Makerere University main library in order to carry out a literature review. We were able to identify and analyse a number of research documents that involved the identification of nutrient deficiencies (of the nutrients of interest) in corn together with the other more efficient ways that were established in order to identify these deficiencies.

SHYAKA BRIAN 17/U/10031/EVE (April 18th, 2021 - April 26, 2021)

1.  In this week, we made our second visit to the Makerere University Kabanyoro Research center to collect more indepth data relevant to the study. 2.  I generated some of the interview materials that were required for that day and also did the virtual collection of data by taking pictures of the maize leaves so as to acquire a clear image. 3. We later continued with the design of our data collection document basing on the futher data we had gotten from the research center.

Makwasi Crispus

1. On Monday 29th March, we met our supervisor to bring forward our project idea and get guidance in line with it. 2. I made a visit with the rest of my group mates to Kabanyolo Farm, a Makerere University Agricultural Research Center. The aim of the visit was to get an understanding of the maize plant which is the focus of our project.  3. We had a successful interview with Mr Lwasa Stephen, the farm manager. We used a questionnaire to carry out the interview. 4. During our meeting we recorded the interview and this guided us during the data document design for the project.  After the meeting we all had to come together and discuss how we would make sense of the information we got from kabanyolo farm.
